CDT-Africa received 19 (nineteen) students from Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) on January 13th, 2020. This is the second visit from SJTU to strengthen Africa Pharmacopeia project which is being implemented by both CDT-Africa and SJTU.

On their arrival to the center Dr. Abebaw Fekadu and Professor Eyassu Makonen delivered warm welcoming address to the students and to Professor * Fu who is leading the team. Professor Fu added that SJTU also expressed warm gratitude to CDT-Africa for long-term cooperative plans. Afterwards, three students from SJTU introduced the activities they will be undertaking on experiment, database, and field research for the Africa Pharmacopoeia project. 

The aim of the collaboration is to make the students work closely with CDT-Africa’s PostDoc fellow and PhD candidate along with the rest of the center’s staff for two weeks to strengthen the collaboration on the development of Africa Pharmacopeia programme. 

Group leader on experiment, Mr. Liu Jinzhao from SJTU School of Pharmacy, introduced the steps of lab research on Kosso and Bissana, by emphasizing the necessity of research on African local herbal medicine. 

Group leader on database, Ms. Liu Xingwen from SJTU School of Mechanical Engineering, explained the development plans of the database; to build a SQL module database and to design a webpage-based front end for searching purpose, whereby the establishment would be a long-term commitment, and emphasized the team’s dedication to this program.  

Group leader on social research, Ms. An Shuoyu, graduate student of SJTU, explained the team’s action plans; visits to World Bank, China’s Mission to African Union, China’s Embassy in Ethiopia, Federal Ministry of Health, and local hospitals & households, which the team believes will contribute additional insights to the construction and development of Africa Pharmacopoeia.
